The Sacrament of Reconciliation
Through the mediation of the priest, we believe that Jesus forgives us our sins when we are truly sorry for our transgressions of thought, word and deed. Our sins break the laws of God and those that are expressed by the Church for the good of the community.
Deliberate, willful and freely-chosen sins make us turn away from the source of all grace ... Jesus Himself. Other acts of sinfulness — smaller in intent and content — weaken our personal relationship with God as do they upset the moral equilibrium of the community of faith. Confession of sin and repentance of heart make possible the strengthening of the human soul, thus fortifying the person with the grace (life) of the Lord Jesus Himself ... ‘the Way, the Truth, the Life’.
Sacramental Reconciliation (auricular confession) is the external reality of the love and forgiveness of God through sign, symbol and prayer. Celebrating this ritual is the constant reminder of God’s presence in our lives. |
