Mass of Healing and Anointing
Each
year, some time during the summer months, we gather around the Altar of
God to be healed of our infirmities and cleansed of sin —
also to be strengthened by the grace which comes to those who seek
God's help. Incorporated into this Liturgy is the Rite of Anointing.
The Oil of the Sick is used for the anointing of the faithful. This Oil
was blessed by Bishop D'Arcy the week before Easter. Through the
material sign of Oil, the Church reminds us of the power of healing
that comes from Jesus alone. This is why the anointing is called a
Sacrament … a sacred sign of the presence of Jesus.
Who
can be anointed? In the name of Jesus and the parish community, all
those are anointed who are frail in health of mind and body, young and
not-so-young. Through the anointing and prayers of the Church we
implore healing for those anointed. Anointing with oil is an ancient
sign of faith in the believing community. We read in Sacred Scripture:
“Is
there anyone sick among you. He should ask for the presbyters of the
Church. They in turn are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in
the name of the Lord. This prayer uttered in faith will reclaim the one
who is ill, and the Lord will restore him to health.”
— James 5.13ff.
Following
the Mass of Healing and Anointing, there will be a luncheon for those
who attend. Publicity for the Mass will be made two or three weeks
ahead of the scheduled date. Please sign up accordingly so that we know
how many to prepare for. There will be guest priests celebrating with
us and assisting in the Rite of Anointing.
Sign
up sheets will be posted in the vestibule of the Church. Feel welcome
to sign up family members or relatives who may have a registered
membership in another parish. All are welcome to this celebration.
